Mary Powell

Company: Sunrun
Title: CEO
Industry: Energy

Standout achievement in 2025: Grew Sunrun by adding more customers to its solar and battery programs, boosting energy storage and grid support, while recording record revenue.

Powell has pivoted Sunrun, America's largest provider of rooftop solar and batteries, to a storage-first model, increasing battery installations by 800% since 2021. From the second quarter of 2021 when she joined the company through the third quarter of 2025, total batteries installed has grown from 23,000 to 217,000.

Sunrun's new home-to-grid distributed power plant (DPP) business reached scale in 2025 and is now the largest operator of DPPs in the country. Battery customers participating in distributed power plants increased 400% year over year, from 20,000 in 2024 to 106,000 in 2025.

In July, Sunrun home batteries in California made history by helping dispatch enough electricity to power more than half of San Francisco. In total last year, Sunrun dispatched nearly 18 gigawatt-hours of energy from batteries to support grids across America — enough electricity to power 15 million homes for one hour. That has made Sunrun and its customers a significant grid resource to prevent blackouts, while also allowing residential electricity consumers to maintain more control over power generation prices.

The company now serves over 1.1 million customers.
