Dr. Toney is a proud graduate of Hampton University and currently serves as an Associate Professor and Endowed Chairperson for the Center for Entrepreneurship, Economics, Finance and Accounting. Her position was endowed in 2020 in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the School of Business and the broader academic community. She has successfully led initiatives to enhance research collaborations, secured external funding and strengthened the department's reputation for academic excellence.
Dr. Toney has a strong commitment to HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges & Universities) with an academic background that includes education and service to Hampton University, Savannah State University, Clark Atlanta University and Jackson State University. Her dedication to our institutions and students is evidenced in her strong record of excellence in research, grantsmanship, service, and as an advocate for students. She is an active member of the Hampton University Community, serving as the Faculty Liaison to the Student Government Association, advisor for the Hampton University Student Managed Investment Fund, the Entrepreneurship club, and the Real Estate Club.
In addition to her academic contributions, Dr. Toney actively engages in the broader Hampton Roads community as a board member for the World Affairs Council of Greater Hampton Roads and a Finance Committee member for the Girl Scout Council of the Colonial Coast, where she has shared her expertise in lectures, conferences, and community outreach programs.
Dr. Toney is a Duke University Diversity Initiative for Tenure in Economics (DITE) Fellow and Sam Walton Fellow, a member of Omicron Delta Epsilon, Beta Gamma Sigma, American Economic Association, National Economics Association, Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession, and the Ph.D. Project. She has received research grants from The National Science Foundation and the Department of Education, and frequently presents her research at national and regional conferences. She has published articles in the areas of economics and business. Her research interests include entrepreneurship, urban economics, migration, quality of life, and economic education.
