How to choose the right Delta card
How you travel heavily factors into which Delta card is right for you. As you consider your options, here's what you'll want to think about.
Co-branded or travel card
If you frequently travel with Delta, a Delta credit card can make a lot of sense. Co-branded Delta cards provide the opportunity to expedite your journey to elite status, receive complimentary upgrades and take advantage of statement credit offers. Other perks, such as free checked bags and 15% off award flights can make these cards worth paying for.
However, if you only occasionally fly Delta and prefer to keep your options open, a more universal travel credit card is a better fit. These cards typically don't offer Delta-specific perks, such as free checked bags or elite status boosts, but are more flexible. The benefits you receive from a travel card can apply to Delta flights, such as fee credits and travel insurance, but they can also apply to other airlines or types of travel. The top travel cards earn flexible rewards, which gives you more redemption choices compared to earning Delta SkyMiles.
Premium, mid-tier or basic Delta card
Delta loyalists need to hone in on the specific co-branded card that will suit their needs. Anyone who travels regularly and almost exclusively with Delta should take a close look at any of the premium Delta cards, such as the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card. With a luxury Delta card, you can earn elite status faster and save money with annual perks like the Companion Certificate.
For those who love Delta, but only travel a handful of times a year, the additional cost of a premium card may not be worth it. In that situation, the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card can be worth it. Even if you only use the card's first checked bag free benefit, you'll save at least $70 per person per roundtrip.
Pros and cons of a Delta credit card
- Elite status boost: You can expedite your progress to elite status with certain Delta cards and receive luxury perks like lounge access
- Award flight discount: Most Delta co-branded cards offer a 15% Delta award flight discount, which increases the value of your SkyMiles
- Save on baggage fees: Most of the co-branded Delta cards offer the first checked bag free for the primary cardholder and up to 8 guests traveling on the same reservation and an eligible Delta flight
- Restrictive rewards: With Delta co-branded cards, you're limited to redeeming directly through the SkyMiles program, which has dynamic pricing and can devalue miles without notice
- Limited benefits: Many of the best benefits only apply when you're traveling with Delta, such as Delta Sky Club access
FAQs
Which rewards transfer to Delta?
There are a handful of niche rewards programs that transfer to Delta. However, American Express Membership Rewards points are the best option because the transfer ratio is 1:1 and they are easy to earn.
Is the Delta Reserve card better?
The Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card is better than most Delta cards in terms of benefits and perks. However, for anyone who doesn't frequently fly with Delta or isn't able to fully utilize its benefits, a more affordable card may be a better choice.
Does the Delta Gold card get lounge access?
You won't get airport lounge access with the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card or Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card. Credit cards with access to Delta Sky Club locations and other lounges include the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card and The Platinum Card® from American Express.
Do Delta points expire?
No, your Delta SkyMiles will not expire as long as your account is open and in good standing.
Can you buy a pass to the Delta Sky Club?
Yes, while you can buy a pass for the Delta Sky Club, they are only available to purchase for Medallion members. An individual membership costs $695, or 69,500 miles, and the executive membership is $1,495, or 149,500 miles.

Our methodology
To determine which cards offer the best value for Delta flyers, CNBC Select analyzed over 250 major credit cards issued through FDIC-insured banks and NCUA-insured credit unions that are widely available in the U.S.
We compared each card on a range of features, including rewards, annual fees, welcome bonuses, introductory and standard APR and balance transfer fees and foreign transaction fees. We also considered additional perks (e.g., ongoing travel or merchant statement credits), cardholder protections (e.g., purchase protection, $0 liability protection and travel insurance), the application process when available (e.g., is there a credit pull or required credit score) and how easy it is to redeem points (e.g., are rewards are tied to a specific brand; if transferable, to how many/which partners, can you redeem for straight cash back).
We also considered CNBC Select audience data when available, such as general demographics and engagement with our content and tools.
For the cards that offered a rewards program, we considered consumer spending data forecasts from location intelligence firm Esri to determine where U.S. consumers are spending the most money, like on dining and travel. We used this to help determine what bonus categories are most useful for consumers. Since the value of a point or mile varies based on what they can be redeemed for, we also considered things like transferability and the ability to redeem for cash-back.
When choosing the best Delta cards, we focused on cards that earn Delta SkyMiles or earn flexible rewards that can be transferred to Delta. We also considered Delta-specific benefits and card perks that are relevant for travelers.
