Best airline credit cards with free checked bags in 2026

Free checked bag perks typically apply to multiple passengers, so the savings can quickly add up.

All of the major U.S. airlines charge baggage fees of around $30 to $50 for a first checked bag on domestic flights.

There are a handful of ways to avoid paying for checked bags. For instance, customers traveling in a premium cabin and those with elite status generally can check at least one bag for free.

The easiest way to avoid checked bag fees on most airlines is to open a co-branded airline credit card that offers free checked bags as an ongoing benefit. For anyone who isn't loyal to a single airline, there are even general travel credit cards with statement credit offers that can be used toward checked bag fees.

Best credit cards with free checked bags

Best for any airline

Who's this card for? The Chase Sapphire Reserve® is an excellent general travel credit card if you want premium benefits like airport lounge access and comprehensive travel protections.

Free checked bag benefit: The Sapphire Reserve doesn't have a specific free checked bag perk. However, every year, cardmembers receive a general travel credit of up to $300 each account anniversary year that can be used toward checked bag fees. It's an easy-to-use benefit and applies to any airline — just pay the bag fee with your card, and you'll automatically receive a statement credit on each account anniversary year. This card also offers travel insurance perks like baggage delay insurance and lost luggage reimbursement.

Other ways to avoid checked bag fees

Having the right travel credit card or airline credit card isn't the only way to avoid paying for checked bags. In fact, if you're loyal to a single airline or typically pay for more expensive fares, this card perk may be completely irrelevant to you.

Most airlines provide a free checked bag or two if you're flying in business class, first class or you pay for a more expensive economy fare. You also typically won't have to pay for checked bags on long-haul international flights.

The vast majority of airlines offer elite status and depending on your elite status tier, you may receive free checked bags on any flight with that airline or its partners. For example, if you have United Airlines Premier Gold status, you receive two free checked bags when flying in Economy. You'll also qualify for Star Alliance Gold status, which gets you an extra baggage allowance on eligible flights with other Star Alliance airlines.

For most people, having the right credit card is the easiest and cheapest way to address checked bag fees. You'll usually pay less than what you would pay for premium airfare that comes with free checked bags and it's not as complicated as earning airline status (although you can earn status without flying with many of these credit cards).

One scenario where you can receive free checked bags without any additional costs or hoops to jump through is if you're an active-duty military member. Most airlines provide priority boarding and free checked bags with a valid military ID.

FAQs

To get your checked baggage fee waived, you'll generally need elite status with that airline or its partners or a cobranded credit card that comes with free checked bags. You may also be able to avoid checked bag fees depending on the itinerary you're flying or the class of service. Many international flights and business-class tickets come with free checked bags.

Carry-on baggage fees aren't the norm, but depending on the type of ticket and airline, they are something to watch for. Some airlines charge passengers who booked the cheapest fares (often referred to as basic economy) extra for a carry-on bag. Ultra-low-cost carriers, such as Spirit and Frontier, may also make you pay for a carry-on bag. Note that personal items, such as a purse or small backpack that can fit under the seat in front of you, are almost universally free.

In most cases, simply having a co-branded credit card with a free checked bag benefit linked to your frequent flyer account is all you need to utilize the perk. However, there are instances where you need to pay for the flight with the card in order to waive the checked baggage fees, so be sure to read your cards terms and understand the fine print.

Free checked bag benefits typically only cover standard-sized luggage. However, certain cards have general travel credits. In these instances, the credit may cover incidental fees, including oversized baggage.
