How to choose a sign-up bonus
Before choosing a bank account sign-up bonus, there are a few things you should consider:
- Minimum deposit requirements: Check how much you need to deposit to qualify for the bonus and ensure the amount is feasible.
- Direct deposit requirements: See if you need to set up direct deposit and what the terms are. Make sure you can easily arrange this with your employer or income source.
- Timeframe: Ensure you can comfortably meet the bonus deadline.
- Fees: Consider any monthly maintenance fees or other charges that could potentially offset the bonus.
Do I have to pay taxes on a checking account bonus?
Yes, in most cases, you have to pay taxes on a checking account bonus. It may feel like free money, but a cash bonus is considered taxable interest income by the IRS and is added to your gross income.
If a bank gives you a $300 bonus for opening a checking account, for example, you need to report $300 as interest income on your tax return that year.
If the bonus is $10 or more, your bank should send you a Form 1099-INT or 1099-MISC before taxes are due. Even if it doesn't, though, you still need to declare the bonus.
The amount of tax you need to pay on the bonus depends on your tax bracket and effective tax rate for that year.
Are checking account bonuses worth it?
Taking advantage of a promotional bonus can be worth it if the cash incentive outweighs the account requirements. Maintaining an account balance or enrolling in direct deposit can tie up funds that would be better placed elsewhere.
.You may have to wait months before even receiving the bonus. And you'll be paying tax on it, so it won't be as large as you think.
Investigate the offer the way you would any deposit account. If there are high fees, limited ATM access or other red flags, it might not be worth it.
FAQs
What is bank account churning?
Bank account churning is opening new bank accounts to earn their sign-up offers and then often moving your money or closing the account. Opening many bank accounts in a short period can backfire and raise suspicion among banks, and you may face consequences as a result.
Do banks ever give away airline miles as a bonus?
While less common than cash bonuses, some banks do offer free airline miles for making a certain number of savings deposits or debit card purchases. It's usually tied to a specific airline partner.
Should I have more than one checking or savings account?
If you are good at staying on top of your finances, having multiple deposit accounts can secure you a good return while also allowing you to take advantage of other benefits. You can use one checking account for bills and another for daily spending, or use separate accounts for business and personal expenses.
Some couples have joint accounts for household expenses, as well as their own private accounts.

Our methodology
To determine which consumer checking accounts provide the best place to deposit your money and earn a bonus, CNBC Select analyzed dozens of U.S. checking accounts offered by the largest national banks and credit unions.
While the accounts we chose in this article all have bonus offers, we also compared each checking account on a range of features, including:
- Reasonable bonus requirements
- Availability nationwide
- Physical branch locations and/or online accessibility
- Large ATM network
- FDIC- or NCUA-insured up to $250,000
We also considered CNBC Select audience data when available, such as general demographics and engagement with our content and tools.
All of the accounts included on this list are FDIC- or NCUA-insured up to $250,000. This insurance protects and reimburses you up to your balance and the legal limit in the event your bank or credit union fails.
Product and feature availability vary by market, so these accounts may not be offered in your area.
Most brick-and-mortar banks require you to enter your ZIP code online for the correct account offerings. The rates and fee structures for checking accounts are subject to change without notice. Any return on your checking account depends on associated fees and your account balance. To open a checking account, some banks and institutions may require a deposit of new money, meaning you can't transfer money you already have in an account at that bank.
