How do credit card welcome bonuses work?
Welcome bonuses allow new cardholders to earn extra rewards, such as cash back, points or miles, typically during the first several months of opening their new card. To earn the welcome bonus, you often have to meet certain spending targets within a timeframe, which will vary from card to card.
Some cards offer bonuses of $200 or $300, while rewards for premium cards with higher annual fees can reach into the thousands.
Types of welcome bonuses
Cash back or statement credits
Cash back or a statement credit is a common welcome bonus for no-annual-fee credit cards. This is a great option if you want to avoid complex point systems or apply rewards to your balance.
Flexible points and miles
Transferable points or miles are commonly redeemed for elevated value with partner airlines and hotels. There are minor differences between points and miles in terms of redemption value, making either a great option for flexible bookings.
Gift cards
Some issuers offer a gift card that is instantly applied to your account after approval. For example, the Prime Visa comes with a $150 Amazon Gift Card if you're approved and have an eligible Prime membership.
Hotel free nights
Hotel credit cards often tout "reward nights," or complimentary stays at a branded property, usually with stipulations (such as a cap on the room rate).
Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® currently offers up to 4 Free Night Awards (each night valued up to 50,000 points; certain hotels have resort fees) after qualifying purchases.
How to meet a welcome bonus spending requirements
Don't spend irresponsibly just to hit a welcome bonus. Having a plan to hit your target spend can ensure you get your rewards while still making sound financial decisions.
- Don't use other cards: You might be tempted to make purchases with cards you own, especially if they earn greater rewards on select categories. But the opportunity cost of earning those rewards might not be worth giving up a larger welcome offer.
- Offer to pick up the check: If you're dining out with friends, offer to cover the bill with your card and have everyone repay you via Venmo or PayPal.
- Sign up before a large purchase: If you know you will be buying an appliance, covering wedding expenses or making some other large purchase, a card with a generous welcome bonus will reward you for spending money you already budgeted for.
How to choose a credit card based on the welcome bonus
A welcome bonus is a one-time perk, so carefully consider all the other benefits, requirements and fees before applying.
Determine bonus value
For certain types of cards, it's simple to estimate the bonus value. For example, a $500 cash bonus is worth $500, but how much are 50,000 points or miles worth? The answer depends on the type of rewards and how you intend to use them:
- Hotel points or airline miles: Only redeemable within the specific program, limiting your options
- Transferable points: Can typically be moved to different airlines or hotels, which provides you with more choices
This added flexibility can increase the value of flexible rewards, so 50,000 transferable points are generally worth more than 50,000 hotel points.
Check the bonus restrictions
You may be required to spend a certain amount within a specific number of months or a specific shopping category. There may also be a cap on the rewards you can receive, or blackout dates or other restrictions on travel perks.
Look at the card's overall value
A welcome bonus is nice, but the card should meet your long-term needs. Most of the time, a card with a smaller bonus but lower fees and better perks is the best option.
- Annual fee: Will the card's annual fee undercut its value over the next several years?
- Ongoing rewards: How many points or miles will you earn after the intro period is over?
- Perks: Does the card offer lounge access, rental car protection, waived foreign transaction fees or other benefits?
Know your spending habits
Before you sign up for a card, compare the bonus requirements to your typical monthly budget. Will you need to make purchases you normally wouldn't or shop in categories you usually don't?
Look at your card statements over the past few months. If you usually charge $1,500 per month, try to stick with cards that have a spending requirement of $4,500 or less.
Credit card welcome bonus pros and cons
You can score cash back, points or miles — or other perks, like gift cards and travel statement credits — through a welcome bonus. But these one-time benefits come with some drawbacks.
- Strong return: The best welcome bonuses effectively offer 10X to 20X points per dollar.
- Unique value: You can quickly earn business-class flights, luxury hotels or other valuable rewards.
- Offset large purchases: If you have a wedding, home repairs or other big expenses coming up, a welcome bonus can earn you rewards on money you already planned to spend.
- May lead to overspending: A welcome bonus can entice you to spend more than you normally would or in categories you usually don't.
- One-time event: Intro bonuses expire after several months and can be outweighed by things like annual fees, high interest rates or late fees.
FAQs
How do credit card sign-up bonuses work?
Credit card sign-up bonuses are typically one-time offers you can qualify for when you open a new card. These rewards often come in the form of cash back, points or miles, and they generally require spending a certain amount of money on the card within the first few months of account opening.
Are credit card sign-up bonus offers worth it?
Credit card sign-up bonuses can be worth it, as they typically add hundreds of dollars (and sometimes over a thousand dollars) back to your wallet. Plus, they're generally non-taxable since you have to spend money to earn them. However, you should only pursue a welcome bonus if you can meet the spending requirement without overspending or stretching yourself too thin.
How many credit card sign-up bonuses can you earn?
Some card issuers, like American Express, limit the number of sign-up bonuses you can earn for a card to once per lifetime. Others may allow you to earn a sign-up bonus multiple times but could make you wait a certain period of time before being eligible again.
Are credit card sign-up bonuses taxed?
Credit card sign-up bonuses are typically not considered taxable income. They usually have a spending requirement, which makes them a form of rebate or discount.
What is the $750 bonus on a Capital One credit card?
With the Capital One Spark Cash Select you can earn a $750 cash back bonus when you spend $6,000 on purchases within the first three months from account opening.

Our methodology
To determine which cards offer the best value, CNBC Select analyzed over 250 major credit cards issued through FDIC-insured banks and NCUA-insured credit unions that are widely available in the U.S. and offer welcome bonuses.
We compared each card on a range of features, including rewards (e.g., cash back, points and miles), annual fees, welcome bonuses, introductory and standard APR and balance transfer fees and foreign transaction fees. We also considered additional perks (e.g., ongoing travel or merchant statement credits), cardholder protections (e.g., purchase protection, $0 liability protection and travel insurance), the application process when available (e.g., is there a credit pull or required credit score) and how easy it is to redeem points (e.g., are rewards are tied to a specific brand; if transferable, to how many/which partners, can you redeem for straight cash back).
We also considered CNBC Select audience data when available, such as general demographics and engagement with our content and tools. Since the value of a point or mile depends on what it can be redeemed for, we also considered factors such as transferability and the ability to redeem for cash back.
