A family vacation or getaway with friends should be fun, but splitting expenses can add unwanted stress.
That's especially true when you're shelling out big bucks: More than half (54%) of travelers expect to pay more for travel expenses in 2025 than they did in 2024, according to a Squaremouth survey.
Fortunately, we've got some tips on how to budget your trip and split expenses when traveling with a group;
What we'll cover
Figure out your total costs
Establishing clear communication with everyone in the group is a critical first step towards a smooth vacation. Whether in person or through email or text, have a candid conversation:
- What are the main transportation expenses for the trip?
- How much will accommodations cost?
- What group activities or experiences does each person prioritize? Are there any in particular that some group members are willing to pay more for, while others are not as interested in?
- How will expenses be tracked and paid for during the trip (cash, credit cards, payment apps)?
Once everyone in your group agrees with the trip details, start calculating the cost of flights, accommodations, group activities, meals and more to get a realistic budget.
If some group members don't feel comfortable with the cost, take some time to reassess the budget and see if any compromises can be made
When it comes time to book your travel, use a credit card that earns miles or points toward future travel.
The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (see rates and fees) is a popular choice among those seeking travel rewards and a substantial welcome bonus. The card's intro bonus enables you to earn a chunk of Chase Ultimate Rewards points upfront, which can be put towards your next trip.
The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card packs a punch for a $95 annual fee card, offering annual travel credits, comprehensive travel protections and more.
- You can transfer rewards to all of Chase's travel partners including World of Hyatt, Southwest Rapid Rewards and many more
- Long list of travel and shopping protections
- $50 annual Chase Travel hotel credit

Ways to split expenses
Once you've agreed on a budget, your group can start to think about how these expenses can be split.
Divide everything evenly vs. pay as you go
The simplest method is to split all expenses evenly among group members. Although it requires the least amount of thought, it may not work well if people's budgets or activity preferences are different.
Again, this is where clear communication comes in. Determine as a group which of the trip's expenses can be split evenly for simplicity's sake, and which ones require a "pay as you go" method, where everyone shoulders the individual cost of their meal, tour ticket, etc.
You can also adopt a "round robin" approach, where group members take turns covering the cost of one group activity. The important thing is for everyone to feel heard and to agree on the spending plan.
Assign a spending category
The group can also divide expenses by spending category. It requires a little more planning, but it can potentially reduce the overall cost of the trip.
Some of your group may have credit cards with more bonus points in different categories. One person's card could earn more reward points for hotel bookings, for example, while another is better for dining out.
By assigning each category to the card that offers the most points in that area, you'll maximize the total rewards earned.
The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, for instance, offers some of the highest rewards for booking hotel stays: cardholders can earn 5X miles on hotels (as well as rental cars) booked through Capital One Travel. If someone in your group has a travel card, having them book any hotels or cars you need could help you offset some of the cost with the rewards earned.
The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card has a reasonable annual fee and earns flexible travel rewards, which makes it a great travel card for beginners or heavy travelers.
