If you cancel a credit card, what happens to the rewards you've earned but haven't redeemed yet?
Do you get to keep them indefinitely? Is there a grace period? Do they immediately vanish?
There's no one answer for every card, so we did a little homework for you: Here's what happens to the miles, points and cash-back rewards from different types of credit cards if you cancel them.
Cash-back credit cards
When determining what happens to your rewards, there are three major types of rewards cards to consider. As the name suggests, cash-back credit cards earn actual monetary rewards. Cashback is the most versatile type of credit card reward and doesn't require you to jump through hoops to redeem.
The best cash-back cards don't have an annual fee, including the Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card, Citi Double Cash® Card and Chase Freedom Unlimited® (see rates and fees).
The Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card is great if you want simplicity thanks to its flat-rate 2% unlimited cash rewards on purchases and $0 annual fee.
- High flat-rate return on purchases
- Intro-APR for purchases and qualifying balance transfers for a year
- No annual fee
- Cell phone protection
- Has a foreign transaction fee
- Limited redemption options unless you pair it with a Wells Fargo card that allows point transfers

If you cancel a cash-back credit card
Cash-back credit cards generally don't automatically issue you a statement credit or check after earning cash back — you generally must manually request to cash out your rewards. As such, like flexible rewards, you generally need to redeem cash back rewards before closing a card so that you don't lose them.
If you close your Citi Double Cash® Card, you have 60 days to redeem any cash back rewards.

If you cancel a co-branded credit card
With co-branded credit cards, since the rewards have already been transferred to your loyalty program account, they are yours to keep after you close your card.
Keep the program's expiration policy in mind, though: If you need activity to keep your points from expiring, you'll need to find another way to keep your points active besides credit card spending.
American Airlines AAdvantage miles expire after 24 months of account inactivity, for example, but you can keep them active by using the American Airlines shopping portal.
Flexible travel rewards cards
With flexible travel rewards credit cards, you typically earn points or miles from the bank's specific program. Rewards from these cards can be transfered to airline or hotel loyalty programs, redeemed through the bank's travel portal, turned into cash as direct deposit or statement credit or redeemed for gift cards or merchandise.
Chase Ultimate Rewards® cards, American Express Membership Rewards cards, Capital One miles cards and Citi ThankYou® Rewards cards all earn flexible rewards.
Some popular cards in this category include:
- Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (See rates and fees)
- Chase Sapphire Reserve® (see rates and fees)
- American Express® Gold Card
- American Express Platinum Card®
- Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card
- Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card
- Citi Strata Premier® Card (See rates and fees)
If you cancel a flexible travel rewards card
You typically lose any unredeemed points or miles if you cancel a credit card that earns flexible rewards, although some programs will give you a grace period.
Here are the stated policies from some of the major card companies.
- Chase: You'll lose your Chase Ultimate Rewards® points when you close your card unless you transfer them to an open Chase account.
- American Express: You'll immediately lose all of your Membership Rewards points if you cancel your last or only rewards-earning card. If it's a Corporate Card you have up to 30 days to access points, however, and New York card members have 90 days.
- Capital One: You'll lose any rewards you have not redeemed by the time you close your account.
- Citi: You must use your ThankYou Rewards points within 60 days after closing or forfeit them.
There are several ways to avoid losing points when you cancel a flexible rewards card:
1. Transfer them to partner travel programs
Your best bet is to pick an airline or hotel program that you redeem with frequently and transfer your points. If you don't have any upcoming travel plans and you're not sure when you'll use them, try to pick a program where the rewards don't expire.
2. Move them to an existing card within the same ecosystem
Many cards earn the same type of rewards and allow you to transfer points within the same ecosystem. For example, several Chase cards earn Ultimate Rewards® points, including the Chase Sapphire Reserve, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® and the Chase Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card (see rates and fees).
So, if you have both Sapphire Preferred and Ink Preferred cards and want to cancel the Sapphire, you can move your points over to the Ink card.
The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card packs a punch for a $95 annual fee card, offering annual travel credits, comprehensive travel protections and more.
- You can transfer rewards to all of Chase's travel partners including World of Hyatt, Southwest Rapid Rewards and many more
- Long list of travel and shopping protections
- $50 annual Chase Travel hotel credit
- Has an annual fee
- Requires a high credit score

Balance transfer fee
Either $5 or 5% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater
In addition, you can combine points earned on the Chase Freedom Unlimited®, the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card (see rates and fees) and the Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card (see rates and fees) with the Reserve, Preferred or Ink Preferred to unlock the ability to transfer them. So if you have a Chase Freedom Flex® and a Sapphire Preferred, and you want to cancel the Freedom Flex, move your points to the Sapphire card.
Citi and Capital One work similarly but, with Amex, if you have multiple cards that earn Membership Rewards points, they are all automatically pooled into one account.
If you don't have another card with transferability, consider opening one before closing your existing card. Just keep in mind that many banks have application restrictions, such as Chase's 5/24 rule, which prevents you from getting a new card if you've had more than five new cards in the past 24 months.
3. Transfer your points to someone else
Some programs allow you to share or combine points with other cardholders. For example, Chase allows you to move your points to another Chase card with Ultimate Rewards® that belongs to a member of your household. In that case, you can transfer your points to that person's card before closing yours.
Capital One allows you to share your miles with any other cardholders, even others outside of your household
4. Redeem them for a statement credit, gift card or merchandise
Typically, redeeming your travel points for a statement credit, gift card or merchandise isn't the best option, but it's better than letting your points go to waste.
Small balances may not be worth transferring to an airline or hotel program if you don't think you'll use them. In that case, getting $25 cash back or a $25 gift card may be better.
A bank may close a credit card for a multitude of reasons, including account inactivity, missed payments, bankruptcy, fraud, rewards abuse or anything against the program's terms and conditions.
If this happens, you typically lose your rewards immediately. The only exception is usually for inactivity closures, which might give your 30 to 90 days to redeem your points.
Before you cancel a credit card
Follow these steps before closing your account
Ask for a retention offer
If you're canceling your card because you don't think the benefits are worth the annual fee, call the issuer and ask if they have any retention offers, or special incentives to keep you as a customer.
A retention offer may require you to spend a certain amount within a specified timeframe to receive bonus points or a statement credit that covers the cost of your annual fee.
Pay off your balance
It's best to cancel a card with a zero balance, so you don't have to worry about making payments. If you're carrying a balance that you can't quite pay off and still want to cancel, you can consider opening a zero- or low-interest balance transfer card and moving your balance.
Use any available statement credits
Many travel rewards cards have annual or monthly statement credits, like Chase Sapphire Reserve's $300 annual travel statement credit (reimbursement for travel purchases charged to your card each account anniversary year) or the $200 annual airline fee statement credit (per calendar year when incidental fees are charged by the airline to your Platinum Card® Account; enrollment required) on the American Express Platinum Card®. Use any credits you possibly can before closing.
