Matthew W. State MD, PhD, is a child psychiatrist and human geneticist studying neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD). His lab focuses on gene discovery as a launching point for efforts to illuminate the biology of these conditions and to develop novel and more effective therapies.
Dr. State's lab has played a leading role in demonstrating the contribution of rare and de novo mutations to autism spectrum disorders (ASD), Chronic Tic Disorders (CTD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Their recent work has contributed to the identification of dozens of ASD, OCD and CTD genes and the lab has been a leader in applying systems biological approaches, transcriptomics, and proteomics to characterize the spatial, temporal, and functional convergence of NDD genes in developing human brain.
Dr. State has played a leadership role in multiple national and international genomics consortia and is currently the Scientific Director of the philanthropic initiative Aligning Research to Impact Autism (ARIA) and the Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco.Â
