State Farm homeowners insurance review 2025

State Farm combines affordable rates with exceptional customer service.

Share

As the largest homeowners insurance company in the U.S., State Farm is able to offer reasonable rates, exceptional customer service and access to an army of over 18,000 agents, both in person and virtually.

We like that State Farm includes lots of customization, with endorsements covering sewer backup, service lines, home systems breakdowns and separate coverage for earthquakes. Extended replacement coverage can be added to your policy and, if your property is damaged in a covered loss, State Farm's Premier Service Program can help you find top contractors.

But State Farm has fewer discounts than many competitors and you may need to work with an agent to find out about endorsements not listed online. In addition, the brand is not approving new policies in Rhode Island, Massachusetts or California.

Types of State Farm homeowners insurance

State Farm issues homeowners insurance in all states except Massachusetts, Rhode Island and California.

Basic coverage

A standard State Farm policy includes four types of coverage:

  • Dwelling coverage: Pays to rebuild or repair your home's physical structure and any permanent fixtures, appliances or attached structures.
  • Personal property coverage: Pays to repair or replace items inside your house.
  • Liability coverage: Financial protection if you’re at fault for an injury or damage to someone’s property that occurs in your home.
  • Additional living expenses: Pays for food, housing and other costs if you have to relocate while your home is being repaired.

Riders and endorsements

State Farm offers several riders and endorsements to customize your policy:

  • Replacement cost coverage: This coverage pays to repair or replace items at their market value rather than actual cash value.
  • Valuable possessions rider: Can help cover jewelry, collectibles or art.
  • Backup of sewer or drain: Covers your home and property after a sewer or sump pump backup.

You can also get separate State Farm policies for flood insurance, earthquake insurance and umbrella insurance.
