8 expert travel hacks to save time and money in 2026

Three travel experts share their tips for making trips affordable in 2026.

Share

Booking travel can be tricky, but insiders know the hacks that avoid delays and snag the best prices.

That comes in handy as flight prices have jumped year over year. On May 11, average domestic airfare prices for round-trip economy seats were $383, a 23.2% increase from last year, according to data from the travel search engine Kayak. The average international flight cost $1,097, a 17.8% jump.

CNBC Select interviewed three travel experts to learn how you can save while prices are high. Here's their advice on booking affordable travel this year.

Book as soon as possible

Travel experts regularly touted the "Goldilocks window," or a timeframe when cheap fares are most likely to pop up. That time frame was about three to seven months in advance for domestic flights, and four to 10 months for international flights, outside of peak travel periods.

Now, however, that rule is out the window. "If oil prices continue to rise, air fares are going to continue to rise, and that means waiting for a specific booking window may not help you," said Julian Kheel, CEO and founder of award travel search tool Points Path.

Jesse Neugarten, CEO and founder of travel deals platform Dollar Flight Club, echoed Kheel. "People need to book trips now versus wait, because it's probably just going to get more expensive," he said.

If you can't book now, use price tracking

If you're not able to book or aren't ready yet, start tracking price trends. You can get alerts when the price of a prospective flight fluctuates through platforms like Google Flights, Hopper and Points Path.

You can also use credit card tools to help you with price tracking: Capital One's travel portal shows you whether it's a good time to book using price prediction technology. Plus, if the cost of the flight drops after you book it, you're automatically refunded the difference. You must have a Capital One card to gain access to the portal. CNBC Select likes the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card or the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card.

Keep tabs even after you've booked

Booking your flight is only the first step, Kheel said. Travelers should keep looking for better deals.

"The biggest mistake that travelers are making right now is assuming that once they book their flight, their job is done," he added. "Almost all airfares today, except for basic economy, can be canceled or changed without paying a penalty."

To find cheaper airfare, keep checking the price alerts you initially set up.

"If you find a better price, cancel your previously booked flight and get the lower price with a rebooking," Kheel said.

Check both one-way and round-trip flights

Snagging a one-way flight to your destination with one airline and a second one-way flight with another carrier back home is an established booking hack.

"There are times where one airline might have the cheapest outbound flight and a different airline might have the cheapest return flight," Scott Keyes, founder of flight deal subscription service Going (formerly Scott's Cheap Flights), told CNBC Select in 2023.

This year, however, some airlines have reversed course. "Some airlines, such as American, have now reverted to offering cheaper fares when you book round-trip versus one-way at a time," he said. "You just need to look at everything to find the best deal."

Be as flexible as possible with your travel plans

Having flexibility around your destination and airport can help you save.

"If you are going, say, from New York to London, you could look at New York to Paris or Amsterdam, and it could be half the price," Neugarten said. Things like the demand, carrier availability and even flight cancellation trends could make one city or airport cheaper than another.

Additionally, your savings could easily offset the cost of the alternative transportation. "Take a train or even a really cheap domestic flight within Europe, and you could save $500 or $600 relatively quickly," Neugarten added.

If you have points or miles, use them now

Having points or miles can serve as a secondary currency when booking flights. Additionally, they can be especially valuable when cash fares are high.

"Right now, I'm not booking cash fares. I'm using my points," Neugarten said. "Cash fares are really, really inflated, but if you have a lot of miles and points and you know how to use them, those are not really inflated. The costs are about the same as they were a year ago."

That's because award rates don't rise as fast as cash prices. And, being savvy with your points can also offset higher prices. Some airlines still have transfer bonuses from card portals, which can increase the value of your points.

When shopping for flights, be sure to compare the cost in miles or points and cash.

Pack light or know workarounds

Many airlines are raising checked baggage fees to account for higher jet fuel costs — Delta and Southwest both increased prices by $10 in April.

While you could save by only using a carry-on, that's not always possible on longer flights. Kheel suggests that travelers familiarize themselves with their airlines' baggage guarantees, as they could help them save.

"Delta actually offers you bonus miles if your bag shows up more than 20 minutes after your plane has parked at the gates," he said. "You can file a claim and get those files instantly, even while you're standing waiting at the baggage claim."

To do this, you'll need to submit your SkyMiles number and flight confirmation on Delta's website within two hours of the flight's completion.

You can also save on bag fees with several co-branded airline credit cards. The Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card includes free first checked bags for you and up to eight people traveling on your reservation. Similarly, the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card offers a free first checked bag on Southwest flights for the cardholder and up to eight people on the same reservation.

Get reimbursed by your credit card for delays and cancellations

There has been no shortage of travel delays this year amid conflicts abroad, TSA disruptions and weather events. While you can't control those events, you can try to get reimbursed.

Your first step should be to get in touch with the airline: Depending on its policies, you might be reimbursed for your flight.

If that fails, check if a credit card you already have offers trip delay or trip interruption insurance.

Some cards that offer these perks include the American Express Platinum Card® and Chase Sapphire Reserve® (see rates and fees).
