How to avoid the travel fees quietly inflating your vacation costs

Financial products like airline and hotel credit cards can save you on checked bag and resort fees.

Share

With summer travel season around the corner, chances are your next getaway is already on your mind. But if you've been waiting for airfare prices to finally drop, you're not imagining things — they haven't. Airfares were up 21% year over year as of April, according to the Consumer Price Index, and that's before you've even paid for checked bags.

This spring, every major airline raised checked bag fees by another $10, pushing the typical first checked bag to $45 each way — or $90 round trip just to bring luggage. Add in seat selection fees that now average $33, plus carry-on charges on budget airlines and extras like priority boarding, and that "cheap" ticket suddenly doesn't look so cheap anymore. Here's how to avoid paying most of those added costs.

Checked bag fees

For those who favor Delta, the Delta SkyMiles Gold American Express Card might be your new best friend. It waives the first checked bag fee for you and up to eight companions traveling on the same reservation, which means a family of four on a round trip could save up to $360 in bag fees alone, more than enough to offset the $150 annual fee.

Resort fees

Ever booked a hotel at what looked like a great nightly rate, only to get to checkout and see the total was way higher than expected? That's likely a resort fee at work. A new FTC rule that took effect in early 2025 now requires hotels to display the total price upfront, but the fees themselves aren't going anywhere.

Resort fees are mandatory daily charges added on top of your nightly rate, with the average ranging from $15 to $50 per day, covering things like Wi-Fi or pool access (whether or not you use them). The good news is that the right credit card can make them a non-issue.

The World of Hyatt Credit Card is one card that can help. It automatically gets you Discoverist elite status, includes a free night every year starting on your first card member anniversary and waives resort fees on award stays at participating properties — all for a $95 annual fee.

Foreign transaction fees

If you're planning an international trip, the card in your wallet could be quietly costing you on every single purchase. Foreign transaction fees are generally 1% to 3% of each transaction amount. When you factor in the number of purchases you might make in a typical vacation day, from meals to transportation to souvenirs, those fees add up quickly. Two cards that charge no foreign transaction fees are the Chase Sapphire Preferred and the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, both of which waive the fee entirely and earn travel rewards on top of it.

ATM fees

If you're someone who relies on cash when traveling, those quick ATM stops can add up faster than you'd think. The average out-of-network ATM transaction costs $4.86, made up of your bank's own fee and the ATM operator's surcharge. Abroad, it gets worse. A typical withdrawal overseas can run three fees at once: a flat charge from your home bank, a surcharge from the foreign ATM operator, plus a currency conversion markup baked into the exchange rate — altogether costing you 5% to 10% more than it needed to.

The Charles Schwab Investor Checking and the Axos Rewards Checking can help. Schwab offers unlimited ATM fee rebates for cash withdrawals worldwide with no foreign transaction fees, which makes it the stronger pick for international travel. Axos reimburses unlimited domestic ATM fees with no monthly cap, so if your trips are mostly stateside, it can cover you as well.
