Honeydue budgeting app review

You and your partner can budget and track bank accounts, credit cards, loans and investments linked to over 20,000 institutions.

Share

If you and your partner share finances, tracking your spending can be tricky. Budgeting apps designed for couples allow more than one device to log in and track bank accounts, credit cards, loans and investments.

Honeydue is especially designed for twosomes, romantic or otherwise. You can keep tabs on individual and joint accounts from more than 20,000 institutions, choose which to share, set budgets and savings goals and communicate about money matters with in-app messaging.

What is Honeydue?

Honeydue is a free budgeting app that lets two people view shared and individual accounts up close, getting insights into transactions, balances and spending and payment patterns.

Available for both iOS and Android, it links to deposit accounts, credit cards, investments and more from over 20,000 institutions.

Collaborating on finances can be fraught, so Honeydue includes an in-app messaging feature and an educational blog with advice on managing money together.

Honeydue features

One of the few budget apps specifically designed for couples, Honeydue has a variety of unique features.

Customizable sharing

Partners can choose which accounts are shared and which are kept private, including whether to share just account balances or add individual transactions, as well. You can easily toggle between individual, joint and all accounts.

Budgeting tools

Once an account is added to Honeydue, transactions are automatically slotted into categories like "home & utilities" or "date nights," but users can create custom names and categories, too. You can split expenses and get alerts when you reach a pre-set spending limit in a given category.

You can also enter recurring bills and get alerts about due dates, which can help you avert late fees or surprise changes in your balances.

In-app chat

The Chat feature allows couples to easily message each other. If a recent expense doesn't look familiar, you can comment or add emojis directly to the transaction without having to log into another app.

Keeping financial discussions in the app has the added bonus of helping to prevent money issues from bleeding into the rest of your life.

Is Honeydue safe?

Honeydue is a SOC 2 Type 2-certified app with security features that include 256-bit encryption and multi-factor authentication. It maintains read-only access, with accounts synced via Plaid.

Deposits in Honeydue's Joint Cash accounts are FDIC-insured through Sutton Bank.

How much does Honeydue cost?

All the features on the Honeydue budgeting app are free, although users can choose to leave a recurring tip of between $1 and $10

The company earns revenue through in-app ads, but there is no ad-free premium tier.

Is Honeydue right for me?

Whether you share all your accounts with your significant other or keep some separate, Honeydue can help you monitor bills, deposit balances, investments and more.

Its creators understand that sharing finances comes with unique challenges, so users can keep some accounts private, communicate through the in-app chat and split expenses.

As a free app, its offerings are more bare-bones than competitors with paid tiers, like Monarch Money and Origin. It's only available on mobile, and if you get irritated by in-app ads, it might not be the right product for you.
