Since it began selling vehicle protection plans in 2004, CarChex has partnered with some of the most trusted names in the automotive industry, including Kelley Blue Book, Edmunds and CarFax.
There are five levels of customizable coverage and 21 different contracts, from basic powertrain coverage to bumper-to-bumper protection. In fact, its plan variety is why we rated CarChex one of CNBC Select’s best extended car warranties.

CarChex requirements
To apply for a service contract, you’ll need the make and model of your vehicle, as well as its Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and current mileage.
Age and mileage limits
Vehicles with up to 250,000 miles are eligible for coverage. Some contracts may have age limits.
Waiting period
Most extended warranty companies impose waiting periods to ensure a vehicle is in good working condition. CarChe requires 30 days after signing and 1,000 additional miles before the warranty takes effect.
Deductibles
$1,000 for any repairs made during the first 90 days, then $0 to $250 for most components and $250 to $500 for engine or transmission replacement.
Claims Process
Take your vehicle to an ASE-certified repair shop, which will contact the claims department to obtain approval for any necessary repairs.
If the repairs are covered, the claims administrator for the plan you purchased will make payment directly to the garage, minus any deductible you are responsible for.
How much does a CarChex contract cost?
CarChex advertises service contracts starting at $99 per month. For a five-year Platinum policy on a 2021 Ford Escape with 50,000 miles, we were quoted $191 per month for 24 months.
Similar to an extended car warranty, mechanical breakdown insurance (MBI) covers unexpected mechanical or electrical issues that occur after your manufacturer's warranty has expired. Our top picks include Geico and AAA.
The primary difference is that MBI is typically available as an add-on to your car insurance. Additionally, while extended car warranties are available for older or higher-mileage cars, MBI is typically limited to newer vehicles.

- Roadside assistance and replacement rental car

Additionally, CarChex has more options, with five plans and some add-ons, compared to autopom’s three main policies.

Both CarChex and CarShield have positive reviews, though CarShield has a history of customer complaints (and the Federal Trade Commission) about claims being unfairly denied.
CarShield has a slightly higher mileage cap, 300,000 miles, versus 250,000 for CarChex.
In terms of cost, CarChex runs about $400 to $500 more a year. However, contract holders can receive a discount for paying the full year's fees upfront.
How do I buy a CarChex extended car warranty?
You can get a free online quote from CarChex by providing your name, email, address, phone number and the vehicle's year, make, model, mileage and VIN.
To process payment, though, you’ll need to speak to a representative at 800-635-6014. CarChex agents are available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 9 pm ET, Saturday from 10 am to 7 pm ET and Sunday from 12 pm to 6 pm ET.
Is CarChex right for me?
CarChex’s generous mileage cap makes it a good fit if you have an older car or one that’s seen a lot of road.
It doesn’t cover luxury vehicles or RV, however. And, unlike some competitors, there’s no discount on collision repairs and no option to cover routine maintenance.
CarChex FAQs
What is an extended car warranty?
An extended car warranty covers repairs to specified parts after the manufacturer's warranty expires. You’re protected for a set number of years or miles, and your plan can cover nearly the entire car (bumper-to-bumper) or just named components, such as the powertrain or electrical system.
An extended warranty may be provided by the car manufacturer and sold by the dealership or it may be offered by a third-party company like CarChex.
How much does a CarChex extended warranty coverage cost?
For a five-year Platinum plan on a 2021 Ford Escape with 50,000 miles, CarChex quoted us $191 per month for 24 months.
Will CarChex provide a rental car while my vehicle is being repaired?
Yes, all CarChex plans include reimbursement for a rental car if you have a covered breakdown repair. CarChex will cover a rental up to $60 a day. It also offers trip interruption reimbursement if your breakdown requires you to stay in a hotel for up to three days.
Does CarChex require a vehicle inspection?
Vehicle inspections are not required for coverage. However, CarChex recommends an inspection to get a clearer picture of your car’s condition. If it’s in excellent shape, your premium could be lower.
Can I cancel my CarChex service contract?
If you cancel your contract within the first 30 days, you will receive a full refund. After that, you’ll get a prorated refund, minus any claims paid.
