Whether it's groceries, gas or vacations, costs rise once you have kids. The right credit card can help offset those expenses, though, with cash back on everyday spending and family-friendly perks.

CNBC Select has rounded up the best credit cards for families, based on common spending categories. We also evaluated features such as purchase protection, travel insurance, budgeting tools and simple rewards redemption — because parents have better things to do with their precious free time than figure out complicated points programs.

For more on how we made our selections, read our methodology below.

Why trust CNBC Select?

At CNBC Select, our mission is to provide our readers with high-quality service journalism and comprehensive consumer advice so they can make informed decisions with their money. Every credit card review is based on rigorous reporting by our team of expert writers and editors with extensive knowledge of credit card productsWhile CNBC Select earns a commission from affiliate partners on many offers and links, we create all our content without input from our commercial team or any outside third parties, and we pride ourselves on our journalistic standards and ethics. See our methodology for more information on how we choose the best credit cards for families.

Our methodology

To determine which cards offer the best value for families, CNBC Select analyzed 234 of the most popular credit cards available in the U.S. We compared each card on a range of features, including: rewards, welcome bonus, introductory and standard APR, balance transfer fee and foreign transaction fees, as well as factors such as required credit and customer reviews when available. We also considered additional perks, the application process and how easy it is for the consumer to redeem points.

While many of the overall best credit cards are also the best cards for families, the needs of a family differ from those of single-person households. Therefore, we selected the best family credit cards with family needs in mind, such as relatively simple rewards programs, easy redemption options and bonus rewards in key categories like gas and groceries. Generally speaking, the best credit card recommendations mentioned above will be the same regardless of how many members are in your family.

We may earn commissions from qualifying purchases made through Amazon links.
