Negotiating fees and subscription charges from your service providers can be a great way to save money. But it can be hard to devote the time and energy required.
Fortunately, there are businesses offering bill negotiation services for a fee, typically a percentage of your total savings. They'll connect with your phone company, streaming service or other provider and work to save you a nice chunk of change on your monthly bills. Some companies will address medical bills, home security and more.
CNBC Select reviewed more than a dozen bill negotiation companies, focusing on cost, types of bills negotiated, customer satisfaction and other criteria in various categories. (Read our methodology for more on how we made our selections.)

How does a bill negotiation service work?
Bill negotiation services allow customers to submit past bills for review. Usually, you only need to upload your invoice, although in some cases, you may need to authorize negotiations, too.
Then, an agent or secure software program will scan the bill for opportunities to negotiate lower costs or statement credits. That includes situations where you were overcharged, billed by mistake or lost service.
While these services are not free, they only charge if they're able to save you money. Typically, you'll pay a percentage of the savings (anywhere from 30% to 60%), so double-check the fee structure before signing up.
What bills can you negotiate?
Bill negotiation services typically work on utilities like mobile phone, cable, internet and even streaming services and medical bills.
Some may also address insurance premiums, credit card interest, newspaper and magazine subscriptions, gym memberships and other regular charges.
Are bill negotiation services worth it?
Bill negotiation services excel at areas where you're overpaying, lowering existing bills and canceling old subscriptions. But they're not free: Some, like BillCutterz, can take as much as 50% of any savings you receive from their efforts.
You only pay if they successfully lower your bill, though, so you're still saving money. So, if you don't think you have the time, energy or nerve to do it yourself, then it's a worthwhile endeavor.
Keep in mind, many companies have higher-priced premium tiers with additional services you may not want or need. To determine if a bill negotiation service is worth it, compare these fees to the savings you'll receive:
- Service fees: Can be one-time, monthly or annual
- Membership fees: Typically, an annual or monthly charge
- Bill negotiation fee: A percentage of the savings you enjoy
Bill negotiation FAQs
Can I negotiate bills myself?
Anyone can reach out to a service to negotiate their bill or lower their rate, but it takes time and determination. One useful strategy is to research competitors' rates and let your provider know you are considering cancelling.
What is the easiest bill to have negotiated?
Medical bills are considered the easiest to get lowered because they commonly have errors or discrepancies and typically don't accrue interest.
Are bill negotiation services legit?
All of the services we selected are legitimate companies with at least ten years in business and an A+ from the Better Business Bureau, the organization's highest grade.
