The United States and Israel launched a massive attack on Iran overnight Saturday, killing what Iranian media said was more than 200 people.
"Our objective is to defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime, a vicious group of very hard, terrible people," President Donald Trump said in a video message.
Several Iranian state media outlets confirmed the death of Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Iranian cabinet declared a 40-day mourning period and a week of public holidays in honor of the supreme leader.
Iran launched counterattacks against multiple cities in the Middle East, including Jerusalem. Explosions were heard around those cities.
The U.S.-Israel attack came after Iran refused American demands that it reduce its nuclear program.
