Industry: Technology
Hometown: Houston, Texas
Notable in 2023: Harnessed Amazon's No. 1 position in the cloud to accelerate digital transformation in health care.

As more health systems and providers are looking to unlock insights from their data by using cloud-based tools and solutions, Amazon's Dr. Angela Shippy is leading the charge.

Shippy serves as the senior physician executive and the clinical innovation lead for health care at the largest cloud provider in the market, Amazon Web Services. In her role, Shippy leads a team that helps health systems leverage the technology to tackle challenging problems and pain points.

By introducing solutions like artificial intelligence workflows, centralized data platforms and population health dashboards, Shippy is working to improve health systems' patient outcomes and drive operational efficiency, which ultimately helps to lower the cost of care. She has established more than 700 touchpoints with health-care leaders in an effort to help them understand the cloud and accelerate both their clinical and operational goals.

Shippy is also spearheading a first-of-its-kind fellowship, a collaboration between AWS and the peer learning company The Health Management Academy. The goal of the fellowship is to bridge the gap between technology and clinical care by working with emerging health-care informatics leaders and providing them with tools. Around 90 executives from more than 50% of the largest health systems in the U.S. will graduate from the fellowship.

An internal medicine physician by training who practiced for many years, Shippy has been talking with health systems of all sizes over the past year about combining what Amazon is historically most known for – cost-efficiency – with one of AWS's strengths, data analytics.

She said on a recent podcast with Healthcare IT Today that recent conversations with health-care systems show they are concerned about margins, supply costs, costs of labor and cost of care. AWS is working with clients to use data from a predictive analytics standpoint and optimize for volume of business, as well as staffing and supply decisions related to that.

Taking this role at AWS was a big change and time of transformation. I wanted to harness the energy, sense of accomplishment, and forward progress gained during the pandemic response – specifically the fast decision making, precise communication, targeted interventions by patient population, and workforce optimization.

Generative artificial intelligence, into which Amazon is investing billions, is another area where Shippy is working with health systems, and that includes research organizations using gen AI to make sure they have all of the data points that are needed for better scientific discovery and "actually fill in the blanks for information that may not be there," she said.

The role of AI in health care will increasingly enter into the doctor-patient relationship directly, she says, with health providers able to offer doctors a way to better summarize notes and clinical information, better direct patients to specialists, and allow health systems to use information across their workforces that ultimately gets better care to patients.
