Why Mamdani faces pushback over city-owned grocery store plan

Grocery prices in U.S. urban areas have tripled over the past 40 years, straining household budgets, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic winner of New York City’s mayoral primary, is proposing city-owned grocery stores to "keep prices low, not make a profit." These are not new concepts in the U.S. and have been tried in the past. CNBC visited two smaller cities in Kansas to see how this model operates and whether it could be replicated in larger cities.
