Why India struggles to tap its rare earth resources

Abhijit Kulkarni, Senior Partner for Metals and Mining at EY-Parthenon, points out that while China spent nearly 25 years building its rare earth refining capacity, India remains heavily reliant on imports from Beijing. He adds India’s immediate priority should be forging strategic partnerships with countries like Russia and South Africa to develop refining capabilities and cut its dependence on China.
